How to choose chlorine and disinfectant for the swimming pool
Share
Choose your pool disinfectant based on the installed treatment system, water measurements, and compatibility indicated on the label.
A larger package or a name with more “effects” does not, in itself, resolve the choice. Before comparing liquid chlorine, granules, tablets, or bromine, identify what the pool currently uses, the dosing equipment, and the parameters you are able to measure. This way, you buy a product that you can use correctly and repeat in your routine.
Which format makes sense for your system?
- Liquid chlorine: start by confirming if the equipment was designed for that product and concentration. In an automatic system, take the reference of the pump, pipes, and the product used; the connection between them needs to be validated.
- Granules: compare the stated purpose, such as maintenance or specific intervention, and the method of application. One product's datasheet does not allow you to deduce the procedure for another with a similar name.
- Tablets or blocks: confirm the size accepted by the feeder and the formulation authorized by the manufacturer for that equipment. The weight of the tablet is a compatibility detail, not a measure of the dose suitable for the pool.
- Multifunction formulas: verify what the described functions actually are and if the components are suitable for the filtration and lining. The QP datasheet for Alboral 3 Efeitos Rápido identifies chlorination, algae control, and flocculation actions; this does not mean that all multifunction formulas have the same composition.
- Bromine: treat it as a system choice. Confirm the feeder, the necessary analysis, and the approval for the specific installation, especially in a spa.
Five data points to confirm before ordering
- Actual water volume: use the installation data; if the volume is unknown, clarify it before calculating any treatment.
- Current product: a legible photograph of the label helps to identify the formulation and avoid an inappropriate substitution.
- Feeder or automatic system: send the brand, model, and type of consumable used.
- Lining and filter: confirm the restrictions in the technical datasheet and from the manufacturer of those components.
- Recent measurements: identify the method and parameters analyzed, including the pH and the disinfectant that your equipment measures.
In a treatment with stabilizer, also confirm how to track that parameter. Products for stabilization or chlorine reduction respond to specific needs: they should not be added just because the water looks different. An analysis and the identification of the previous product make the request for support much more useful.
Examples from the catalog to compare
Norte Pool presents sodium hypochlorite, Alboral PS Rapid, and Bromogene in tablets. These examples illustrate different choices; compare the reference and the label before replacing one with another. Also consult water treatment and the guide to analyzers and reagents.
Use and conservation
Read the label and the safety datasheet of the purchased package. The application method, dosage, intervals, and possibility of pool use are defined for that specific formulation; this guide does not provide a universal dose. Keep a record of the product, the quantity applied, and the measurements taken to understand the water's evolution.
Never mix chemical products, concentrates, different tablets, or leftover packaging. The manufacturer's safety documentation warns, in particular, about the dangers of contact between certain chlorinated products and acids. Use the indicated protective equipment and keep the products identified, in their original packaging, and out of the reach of children. Do not reuse containers or utensils contaminated by another product.
Purchase errors to avoid
- Choosing solely based on the price of the package, without checking the concentration and purpose.
- Buying a tablet that does not fit or is not authorized for the feeder.
- Applying the dose from one datasheet to a different reference.
- Using a corrector, neutralizer, or shock treatment without a measurement that justifies the decision.
- Expecting disinfection to compensate for deficient filtration or cleaning.
Frequently asked questions
Does a pool with salt chlorination also need monitoring?
Yes. The equipment's production and water measurements must be monitored according to the manual. See the salt chlorination guide; the amount of salt and compatible products depend on the equipment.
Can I switch from granules to tablets while maintaining the same procedure?
Confirm the instructions for the new product and the feeder first. The form of presentation does not guarantee the same composition, application, or usage rate.
How to ask for help choosing?
Send the volume, photographs of the labels and the feeder, the filter type, and recent measurements. Request support from Norte Pool to compare references suitable for your installation.
