How to choose a pool filter: sand, cartridge, and replacement

Choosing a pool filter requires distinguishing between the complete equipment, the filter media, and the replacement cartridges. The choice must consider the pump flow rate, the connections, the installation space, and the maintenance you intend to perform. An apparently larger filter or a similar cartridge are not, in themselves, compatible choices.

Sand, cartridge, or filtration set?

For a filter with a filter bed, confirm the authorized materials and the valve configuration. The Poolex Rock Top and Rock Side range distinguishes between top and side valves, dimensions, flow rates, and sand or glass loads by reference. Do not replace one medium with another while automatically maintaining the same mass.

For a cartridge filter, check the element reference, filter surface, access, and cleaning method. The Poolex Thinclear Mono uses a removable element and features specific characteristics for each size. To choose between solutions, compare the required maintenance work and the site conditions, not just the name of the technology.

A set may include a pump and filter, but confirm the contents: valve, pressure gauge, base, connections, and filter media can vary. Make a list of what already exists in the installation and what must accompany the purchase.

Size it with the pump and circuit

The filter must be selected for the installation's operating flow rate. Gather the pump model, curve or expected flow rate, pool volume, and additional equipment. Ask the installer to confirm the match between the filter and pump, including the conditions required for system cleaning.

Compare admitted flow rate, filter area when indicated, operating pressure, and connections. Filtration fineness values should only be compared using the manufacturer's method and configuration. A micron rating does not replace hydraulic compatibility nor does it explain all results in the pool.

Space for maintenance is part of the choice

Measure clear height, width, access to the valve, and space for removing cartridges or components. A top-mounted valve may have different access requirements than a side-mounted one. Check the piping route and, in a system that uses backwashing, the conditions for routing the water according to the design.

Also, confirm the compatibility of the materials with the existing treatment. For a saline installation, ask for the specific reference, not a generic answer based on the brand. Do not open pressurized equipment or alter connections while the circuit is running: follow the manual and consult professionals for installation interventions.

Replacement cartridges for pool and spa

In the catalog, the Thinclear Mono is a complete filter; the INTEX Type A pack contains replacement cartridges. The NetSpa support with cartridge is another configuration. Verify which of these parts you are actually looking for.

Start with the pump or spa model and the cartridge reference indicated in the manual. Record the height, diameter, openings, and type of connection, but use these measurements as additional confirmation. In the INTEX Type A cartridge, compatibility is defined for specific models. "Type A" is not a universal indication for any pump.

The NetSpa documentation distinguishes between cartridge references and support references, including a specific reference for Vita Premium. Confirm the code, even when the dimensions seem similar. For Lay-Z-Spa, use the reference indicated in your version's manual; the Bestway manuals identify the type and code of the element.

A filter housing and a pack of cartridges have different contents. Check how many elements are included and whether you need the support piece. The designation "antibacterial" does not exempt you from checking and treating the water, nor should it be interpreted as a guarantee of pool or spa disinfection.

Cleaning, pressure, and replacement

Record the reference pressure after cleaning as per the manual. Hayward links increased pressure to the need for SwimClear cleaning and provides guidance on cartridge washing. Use the limit and procedure specific to your filter; do not apply a value taken from another model.

Observe damage, deformations, and persistent dirt. NetSpa recommends replacing elements that are damaged or remain dirty. Do not use cleaning products or aggressive jets without the manufacturer's authorization. Plan the replacement reference before the element becomes unusable.

Frequent errors and useful questions

Can I choose based only on the tank diameter?

No. Compare flow rate, indicated filter area or load, pressure, connections, and maintenance. The diameter helps identify the size, but it does not summarize the installation.

Does a cartridge work if it fits in the support?

An apparent fit does not prove compatibility. Confirm the reference, seal, and indication for the pump or spa model.

When should I clean or replace it?

Follow the manual and the equipment indicators. The condition of the element, pressure, and usage help you decide; an interval from another filter should not be adopted automatically.

Before ordering, send photographs of the plates, connections, and current cartridge. Check the pool filters and request confirmation of the appropriate reference.
