How to choose pool skimmers, drains, and inlets
Share
Skimmers, main drains and nozzles form distinct points in the circulation circuit. The choice must consider the function of each part, the pool lining and the hydraulic design. Buying based only on color or thread size may result in a part that fits the piping, but does not seal correctly against the wall.
The role of each component
The skimmer collects water and debris from the surface. The return inlets return treated water. The suction point serves as a dedicated connection for cleaning; the main drain has its own function in the design. None of these parts automatically replaces another just because it has a similarly sized connection.
Compare the circulation as a whole, including pump, filter, piping and collection and return points. The quantity and location of components must be defined in the design. Do not distribute skimmers and nozzles just to obtain visual symmetry, without considering the shape of the tank and the path of the water.
Concrete, liner or polyester
In the catalogue, the skimmer for concrete and the skimmer for liner or polyester have different applications. Confirm the flange, gaskets, screws and mounting thickness. Hayward documentation also distinguishes versions by pool type, including sealing elements in the references for liner.
A part for an above-ground pool requires compatibility with the existing wall and cutout. When replacing, photograph the installed component and identify the code before removing it. Comparing only the visible lid may hide differences in the body, the cutout or the hydraulic connection.
Standard, wide-mouth and high-level inlets
Compare opening, basket, cleaning access and intended water level. The Glass skimmer and other high-level models require confirmation of the installation design. A finish with water close to the edge is not automatically equivalent to an overflow pool with its own system.
Hayward recommends level regulation in its family of mirror-effect skimmers. Use this information to discuss level management in your project, without assuming any regulator will adapt. Compare the regulator, connections and maintenance access with the requirements of the chosen reference.
Main drains and grates: selection requires the set
To choose a main drain, present the flow rate, type of suction, geometry and planned components to the technical manager. The body, grate, fastening and configuration must match the application. Do not use only the thread or a flow rate indicated in the catalogue to declare the system suitable.
An anti-vortex grate is a part with a declared function; it does not, on its own, demonstrate protection against all suction risks. Confirm the safety documentation and the assembly of the specific set. Keep grates and fastenings in good condition and request intervention when parts are missing or damaged, without using an improvised cover.
Data required before ordering
- Type of pool and interior finish.
- Existing reference or drawing of the new component.
- Cutout, wall thickness and sealing system.
- Piping connections and flow rate planned in the project.
- Function of the part: collection, return, suction or regulation.
- Access for cleaning, inspection and replacement.
For bottom nozzles, confirm whether the reference is for concrete, liner or polyester and what the authorized adjustment is. A possibility of regulating flow does not dispense with circulation sizing. Save the gasket and removable parts codes for future maintenance.
Installation and routine maintenance
Perform integration and sealing according to the manual and project, checking the connections before closing areas that will no longer be accessible. The order of the gaskets, tightening and cutout are specific to the part. Do not use trial sealing materials to compensate for a body incompatible with the wall.
Clean the baskets using the indicated method and observe the water level, grates and fastenings. Access to the skimmer lid must remain available after the exterior finish. Before intervening in the circuit, switch off and prepare the equipment according to the instructions. In case of a leak, identify the origin and reference instead of replacing components just by appearance.
Frequently asked questions
Does a concrete skimmer work in a liner pool?
Only if the reference allows for this application and includes the appropriate sealing system.
Does a wide-mouth inlet remove the need for sizing?
No. The opening is a characteristic of the component; the design defines the circulation.
What should I send to request a replacement part?
Code, photographs, type of lining, cutout and connection measurements, in addition to the description of the function.
